Game of Thrones is a series based on the successful literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire, by American writer George R.R. Martin. The literary saga has sold several million copies worldwide and has been translated into 20 languages. It is more than just a series because it has the means and budget of a feature film.
Fans of the show will recognize the palace as the filming location for the Water Gardens of Dorne.
This is apparent in locations such as Malta, Morocco and Northern Ireland; the quality of the weapons; the animals; the costumes; and the creation of their own language, Dothraki.
There are not many people who haven’t followed this series. Phrases like Winter is coming or Where are my dragons are part of our popular culture. The series Lost may well be the only other one to have had such an overwhelming following.
You can take a guided tour of the Alcazar as the setting for Game of Thrones. Ideal for fans of the series
Game of Thrones in Seville
When you read the description of Dorne in the books of the saga, it transports you to scenarios in southern Spain or northern Morocco. They speak of ripe fruit on the trees and oranges that fall to the ground, impregnating everything with their aroma. It is reminiscent of the orange trees of Andalusia. For this reason, the producers of the series headed for the south of Spain to seek locations to recreate the distant medieval lands of Dorne.
Those in charge had their eyes on several monuments, such as the Alhambra in Granada or the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in Córdoba. But it was the Alcazar of Seville that was finally chosen. Another place where they are going to record is in the Canteras de Osuna. Within its walls, they will recreate the Water Gardens, an oasis full of gardens and ponds that contrasts with the arid climate and landscape of Westeros and is the summer residence of the rulers of Dorne.
It is part of the settlement called House Martell Sunspear, which stays isolated in Dorne, not getting involved in the wars that follow the death of Robert Baratheon. In the fourth season, we meet a member of this family, Oberyn Martell, known as the Red Viper, who is the younger brother of the Prince Regent of Dorne, Doran Martell.
Many fans of the series are eager to learn about these lands and the importance they will have in power struggles.
The Alcazar set
In the land of Dorne, abundant vegetation and fountains overflowing with water are a symbol of wealth, due to the hot and arid terrain. The Alcázar is the ideal setting to recreate this opulence since it does not need many transformations to achieve the desired image.
The Alcazar was the setting of several episodes of the 5th season of the series, such as Kingdom of Dorne
The scenes were shot in October 2014 over nine days. One of the places we know for sure you will see is Mercury Pond. But the funny thing is that they dyed the fountain and the pond blue, with an ecological product that evaporates several days after application. The first three days of filming took care of the exterior scenes and then they moved to the Mudejar Palace.
