👀 Views from a cruise in Seville

The old River Betis—today’s Guadalquivir, the Great River—splits into two as it passes through Seville.

Outside the old city walls, on the west side of La Cartuja Island, the Guadalquivir flows alive from Cazorla, already close to its mouth at Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

This is the industrial and commercial branch where deep-draft ships access the Port of Seville.

The second branch runs between the main part of the city on the east bank and the neighborhoods of Triana and Los Remedios on the west bank. And to admire the beauty of both shores, you can enjoy it from Guadalquivir cruises that travel along this branch, known as the Canal de Alfonso XIII.

The departure point is the iconic Torre del Oro, a fortified tower connected to Seville’s historic walls, on the Seville bank. The boat heads north toward the Alamillo Bridge; once it passes under it, it turns back. But let’s see what panoramas this river journey offers.

As soon as the journey begins, on the right you’ll see the Paseo de Cristóbal Colón and Alcalde Marqués de Contadero—an area for relaxation, lined with sculptural works by renowned artists.

Here you’ll find the Interpretation Center of the First Circumnavigation of the World. After this promenade, in the background and already on the avenue, you’ll pass the Maestranza Theater—designed by architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín, completed in 1991—and the Real Maestranza de Caballería, Seville’s bullring.

At that point, you reach the Isabel II Bridge, also known as Triana Bridge. After passing beneath its 19th-century iron arches, cruisers will spot the Mercado Lonja del Barranco—today a cluster of tapas bars where you can enjoy the diversity of Sevillian food; between the old market building and the river lie the peaceful Jardines del Marqués del Contadero.

We then arrive at the Cristo de la Expiración Bridge (El Cachorro). From here you’ll pass Kayak Torneo Club, a newer bridge called Pasarela de la Cartuja, the Remo Sevilla Sports Club, the Felipe González Library (installed around Renfe’s Torre de Agujas), and the Parque de los Descubrimientos.

Next comes the Barqueta Bridge, with the Cayetana de Alba roundabout honoring the famous Sevillian noblewoman, and above the city buildings you can make out the silhouette of the Torre de Don Fadrique.

From here until the return, after passing under the Alamillo Bridge, the riverbanks are filled with gardens and promenades, leading to the Olympic Roundabout. On both the Seville bank and the La Cartuja bank you’ll find the CEAR Rowing & Canoeing Center of Seville and CEAR La Cartuja.

On the way back, on the La Cartuja bank you’ll come across the Teatro Central and River Park before passing under the Barqueta Bridge. Then cruisers encounter the Jardines del Guadalquivir, culminating at the Rocío Jurado Auditorium.

You reach the pedestrian footbridge again, along with the Navigation Pavilion and the viewpoint of the Schindler Tower, and behind them, in the background, the tall Torre Sevilla.

This stretch is lined with sports facilities such as Kayak Sevilla, the Puerto Triana Water Activities Center, and Club Sup Sevilla, alongside Parque Fernando Magallanes.

You then return to the Cristo de la Expiración Bridge, and on the Triana bank you’ll see the Soul Garden and the Paseo de Nuestra Señora de la O, from where you can glimpse the Callejón de la Inquisición and the eastern wall of San Jorge Castle, today the Interpretation Center of Human Rights of Seville.

You reach Triana Bridge again and, after it, the entrances to Calle Betis. Backlit at sunset, you can make out the silhouette of the Santa Ana Tower.

After passing under the early-20th-century San Telmo Bridge, you can see sports facilities of the Real Círculo de Labradores, then you reach Los Remedios Bridge.

Beyond it are the facilities of the Círculo Mercantil e Industrial de Sevilla and the Seville Nautical Club, where recreational boats are common—and during Holy Week and the April Fair they’re especially noteworthy.

Around the Delicias Bridge the cruise turns back toward the Torre del Oro. First you’ll pass the Seville Aquarium on the Muelle de las Delicias, where you’ll also find the Cruise Terminal of the Port of Seville.

After Los Remedios Bridge, in the background you can see the Costurero de la Reina, then you reach Muelle de Nueva York and Paseo de las Delicias. Behind it you can spot San Telmo Palace, seat of the Andalusian government, and the Jardines de Cristina.
