Seville’s operatic sites

Puerta de la Carne, Avenida Menéndez Pelayo. In Bizet’s opera Carmen it is the garrison of the Regiment of Troops of that time, to which Don José belonged.

Old Tobacco Factory

Current headquarters of the University and stage of the opera Carmen, by Bizet. It was the place where the protagonist worked as a cigar maker, and the prison was located nearby.

Real Alcázar

It is the setting for Donizetti’s opera María de Padilla, mistress of King Pedro I. The Patio de Banderas is related to his other opera, La Favorita, where the King walks through the halls and gardens.

In the surrounding area, Calle Santo Tomás (Cathedral, Archivo de Indias, Alcázar) is the home of Figaro in Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville.

Hospital de la Caridad

Built by Miguel de Mañara, a character who would serve as inspiration for Tomassi and Franco Alfano in their opera Don Juan de Mañara.

Bullring

Scenario of Bizet’s opera Carmen. At the end, at the Prince’s Gate, Carmen meets her death at the hands of Don José.

Opposite the bullring, we can see the Monument to Carmen under the Cigarreras wharf, where Carmen waited for the tobacco from the Indies.
